Birthday (Vignette)

Sophie was so excited. She always felt this way when her birthday came round. Another candle on the cake, another year older. At Sophie's young age she thought she could live forever, immortal, like the angels which adorned her bedroom ceiling.

She had always loved angels, and dreamed of being spirited off on magical journeys while she was asleep. When she awoke it was as if she had been on these special flights of fancy, seeing a world of new possibility.

It was always a loving time, surrounded by her family and friends, a special time where the joy was unimpeded. It knew no bounds. Occasionally she saw flashes of light, unsure whether they were the flickering of the candles on her birthday cake or the presence of angels in their light bodies. Perhaps it was all the same thing she thought.

Today she had a special gift, angel wings which she could wear. So this is how an angel feels with its wings. I'm ready to fly now.
